I hope everyone had a great weekend! It’s Monday night/Tuesday morning here, and I’ve had an uber productive Monday, after an equally productive weekend. Don’t you love it when that happens??
We had some seriously amazing weather over the weekend. Spring has officially set in, and I’m not just talking about the weather. Literally every one of our neighbors in our immediate vicinity was outside doing yard work, along with Michael and I. I loved every minute of it. Is that weird?? It was soooo nice being out in the warm sunshine, even though we were doing really hard work. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes going back to the simplicity of apartment living sounds like a dream, but as challenging as homeownership can be at times, it really does feel great to take care of our home and make improvements. Michael does not share my enthusiasm for yard work, but he’s a good sport about it. I suppose we could call him a “minimalist” as far as landscaping and home decor goes, but not in the cool sense of the term;)
Before I had my surgery back in December, we had started a major backyard project. The first step was having a 700+ square foot patio put in. We live on a marsh and most of the time walking through our backyard was like walking through a swamp. I couldn’t get any plants to grow back there, unless they were the type that enjoyed “wet legs,” so turning the majority of our yard into a concrete slab seemed like the best option so we could actually sit back there and enjoy the marsh view.;) We had the contractors cut grooves into the concrete to mimic a tile pattern on the patio, then I stained it with three different shades of this Valspar concrete stain to make it look like large stone tiles. It ended up being a rather tedious process of basically sponge painting the entire surface, but I managed to finish…in the dark, the night before my surgery. I’m sure my neighbors thought I was crazy working in the cold under a flashlight, but my entire family was coming into town that week for the holidays, and clearly I would not have been able to work on it within the few days after my surgery and before everyone arrived. I’m a total perfectionist when it comes to hosting, and in my obsessive mind, this absolutely had to get done…even though I’m positive my family couldn’t have cared less;)
Anyway, as I said, I finished staining it, and it actually turned out rather well. We haven’t gotten a chance to seal the stain yet because of the weather being too cold the rest of the winter, busy schedules, my surgery recovery, and most recently pollen season leaving a yellow blanket over the our state. The pollen has finally cleared, so we’re officially ready to check this part of the backyard project off our to-do list, but unfortunately I need to touch up quite a few spots where the finish got scratched from sliding furniture across it while we were entertaining over the holidays (since it wasn’t sealed). So long, boring story short, this is how I spent my Monday…re-doing work that I’ve already done. Not my favorite pastime, but I can’t complain too much. It’s been really nice to finally have some time to work on these sort of projects since ditching my career in exchange for my sanity. I’ll definitely share some pics when we’ve completed everything, as well as the technique I used on the concrete (hint: DON’T follow the application instructions on the Valspar can), but here’s a little preview of my staining job.
We’ve already purchased this grey faux wicker outdoor sofa set on Amazon to go on the patio, which I’m extremely happy with….especially considering the great price. The next step is to build a large outdoor table for entertaining, but first I need to convince the hubby that he wants the table too.;) I can’t wait to host a wine tasting out there when it’s all finished.
How did you all spend the weekend? Is anyone working on a similar backyard remodel? I’d love to get some more ideas and inspiration!
PS: I just had to shamelessly share my brunch look with you all because I finally got to wear these new Valentino Rockstud City Sandal Dupes that I got at Target (they come in black too). I absolutely love them and they’re sooo comfy!! A total steal compared to the $1,000+ price tag on the Valentinos. I’m sure they’ll sell out fast, so it you like them, pull the trigger before they’re all gone;)
