Valentine’s Day Shmalentine’s Day

February 15, 2017

Maybe we’re just getting lazy, but my husband, Michael, and I don’t really get into Valentine’s Day festivities anymore.  We were going to at least go out for a special V-Day dinner, but at the thought of fixed menus and witnessing a few painfully awkward encounters of newer couples who’ve had the unfortunate occurrence of Valentine’s Day interrupting their normal relationship progression by adding all sorts of undue pressure (think we’ve all been there!), I asked Michael if we could stay in and have dinner at home.  Of course, he was okay with this, so we just did the standard exchange of cards, flowers, and some chocolate covered strawberries (yum!).  Honestly, the card is always my favorite part.  I’ve saved every single one he’s given me since we started dating nine years ago.  Geez….I really can’t believe it’s been that long.

Luckily, we had a hint of warmer weather yesterday, so we were able to enjoy our breakfast out on our back patio for the first time in ages, which continues to be a work in progress since this giant 700 square foot slab of concrete was poured last fall (expect to see some DIY posts about our patio project).  At least we finally have some comfy furniture out there (found this great deal on Amazon and we’re so happy with it), but I’m also hoping to build a giant farmhouse style table for the patio so we can host al fresco brunches, or wine tastings under the stars this summer.  Currently, every time we want to have a civilized meal out there with friends, we have to carry our heavy porch dining set down stairs.  Needless to say, it’s getting very old.

After our relaxing breakfast, we both went back to work.  Thankfully, we don’t have to travel too far to our jobs these days, as I’m solely working on improving this blog since resigning from my miserable career last month (details in previous post), and Michael works from home most days.  We’re pretty good about not invading each other’s work space, so it works out well.  And as planned, after changing our original plans, we stayed in for a nice home cooked dinner made by my hubby.  He does pretty much all of the cooking; and yes, I do realize I’m very lucky!;)

Honestly, it was the perfect Valentine’s Day.  I’m still sort of recovering from all the stress of the career I just left behind, so it feels amazing to be able to actually relax, or at least try to (I’m still
adjusting;)).

So tell me, are we lazy?  Or is this “normal” for a couple who’ve been married for 7+ years?  I’d love to hear how you all celebrated; and who knows, maybe I’ll feel inspired by your experiences and do something a little more special next year…haha;)

Hope everyone is having a great week!
